Tips for writing the perfect CV

First impressions count - what you need for a great CV

With business tools like LinkedIn and online job searches, it's all too easy to become complacent with your CV. With a saved digital file you can easily forget to update it, missing out important new skills and roles relevant to the job you want. The days of paper CVs and cover letters may be behind us, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take just as much care over your Curriculum Vitae.

When looking for a job, having a great CV attached to your job application is crucial in getting an interview with a possible employer. It's your first interaction with a business, so you need to create the right impression, in both your ability, and your attention to detail - that means checking for spellings (and checking again).

One of the most important features of a good resume is to show your best skills to make you really stand out from the crowd, and to make sure your CV fits the job description, and the business itself.

We have compiled a list of ways to give a positive first impression and get noticed from just a brief look over your CV.

The Basics of a Great CV

1.     How to start off your CV

To catch an employer’s attention, start your CV by listing your applicable key skills and accomplishments. This immediately tells recruiters that you are qualified for the job role and which of your skills could be used in the job you are applying for.

  • Use key words to attract attention, such as ‘innovative’, ‘organised’ and ‘adaptable’
  • Match the skills and responsibilities to the job that you are going for
  • Make sure you make it clear that you understand the responsibilities of the work role

2.     Listing your education and experience

Begin this section with your most recent employment or education achievements. Emphasise any positive changes that you made to the company you worked for previously and show how your responsibilities in these roles helped you develop as an employee.

  • Write a brief summary of your previous work experience
  • Show that you are knowledgeable about the field of work that you are applying to
  • List any qualifications that make you stand out, such as computer skills, or recognised certifications within your field.

3.     Stay concise

Be concise in your approach to writing your CV. Most employers do not take interest in looking at a CV which is longer than 2 pages, so stay direct and clear to the point. To be successful in applying for a job, staying focused when detailing why you are qualified for the job.

  • When listing your contact details, only your phone number, full name, email and address are relevant
  • Let recruiters know what you have to offer them
